The Corcoran 2005 Print Portfolio: Drawn to Representation

Opening Reception - Thursday, March 31, 2005, 6:00-8:00 pm (through August 11)

The Corcoran Mueum of Art

500 Seventeenth Street

Washington, DC, 20006

202-639-1800.

Rob Evans has been invited to create an original hand-pulled print for The Corcoran 2005 Print Portfolio: Drawn to Representation. The internationally recognized Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, is publishing its first print portfolio in 2005 as part of its program to support and promote contemporary printmaking. Evans’ was invited to be one of twenty-four internationally recognized printmakers who will be included in the portfolio, which will be shown at the Corcoran Museum of Art from March 26 through August 11, 2005 to coincide with the annual meeting of the Southern Graphics Council and various other print exhibitions in the nation's capital. The portfolio will be shown alongside other prints by the participating artists. The portfolio will then be available to travel as an exhibition to museums and galleries around the country. Artists have been chosen on the basis of their commitment to craft, of their draftsmanship, and of their talent for design and representation. A varied selection of international artists gives the portfolio multiple approaches to the imagery of real and imaginary landscapes and cities, villages, buildings and interiors, figures and still life arrangements.

Evans’ print, titled Elizabeth Quinn Sleeping (depicting the artist’s infant daughter sleeping on a large bed) is a six color hand -pulled lithograph created by the artist in collaboration with master printmaker Tim Sheesley at Corridor Press in upstate New York (a larger image of the print can be seen on this website by going to this link: http://robevansart.net/id11.html ). The artist drew the image on a stone which was then keyed to 5 other images drawn on mylar and transferred to metal plates, one for each of the 5 additional colors. It was printed in an edition of 70 prints which will all go to the Corcoran for the project and will be available for sale as part of the portfolios.

The Corcoran Museum of Art organized the portfolio project and exhibition, coordinating the production of the prints, the touring show, and providing the catalog, portfolio boxes, and matting and framing for the exhibition. The curator of prints and drawings, Dr. Eric Denker, is responsible for the fully illustrated color portfolio catalog. Each artist receives one of the portfolios for their participation. Additional portfolios will be offered to other institutions of international repute such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, The British Museum in London, and others around the world to support the collecting of work by the artists included. Many of the artists included in the project already have a formal or informal relationship with the Corcoran Museum of Art including Evans, whose large painting Threshold is in the museum‘s permanent collection.

List of participating artists: Jack Boul, Livio Ceschin (Italian), Warrington Colescott, Rob Evans, David Faber, Stephen Fisher, Rupert Garcia, Komar and Melamid (Russian), Andrew Krieger (American, working in Washington, DC), Hung Liu, Mark Leithauser, Pavel Makov (Ukrainian), David Morrison ,Jacques Muron (French), Igor Makarevich (Russian), Lee Newman, Helene Nu (French), Andrew Raftery, Charles Ritchie, Jorg Schmeisser (German, working in Australia), Renee Stout , Evan Summer, William T. Wiley , Safid Zec (Bosnian, working in Italy).

The Portfolio will be available in March 2005 at a publication price of $10,000. The Museum has made eight portfolios available pre-sale, for financing purposes, at $6000 each, several of which are still available. Evans has retained a small number of artist proofs of his print which can be purchased directly from the artist and viewed at his studio by appointment .
